Ooh a trip out of the big smoke. It was on the train that I get to Redhill actually and came back on the one that goes to Luton airport too. I didn’t see much of Brighton to be honest I just got off the train and headed for the seafront where the venue was.

It’s a nice venue I suppose. It’s very community centre just a big cube that has a stage and some balcony seating. Sound was good though. I missed the support (mostly due to recommendations from people including Al that he was about as funny as something very unfunny) so I won’t comment(OK according to Wikipedia he is a friend who tells bad jokes on purpose).

So this is the first time I’d seen Tenacious D since 2002, maybe, in The Ambassador. I’d seen the movie, gotten the soundtrack/album and was really looking forward to hearing some of the new stuff live like Kickapoo or Car Chase City. I wasn’t disappointed.

The show opens in KG and JB’s “apartment” and they play some acoustic tunes, Lee turns up and they sing a few more tunes. This section is almost completely first album stuff (if you’ve seen the first stage show you’ll know it was just them with acoustic guitars). They even play Special Things from the HBO series and a song called RocketSauce (to the tune of Blackbird by The Beatles). This was class and was great to hear the audience singing along with everything.

The action changes when JB suggests they go electric (I almost shouted “Judas”) and whips out the POS guitar made from a toilet seat and electric cord (you know the thick leads that you find plugs on the end of). He hands it to KG and plugs it into a socket that Lee has spilled beer on and BOOM. Stage goes dark and a screen appears. They are dead and after some discussion decide they are in hell. They meet and recruit for their band, The Antichrist (“You really look like him(Jesus)”, “Yeah I get that a lot”), Charlie Chaplin(he’s in hell because he was gay) and Colonel Sanders (KFC’s mascot, he killed “like a billion chickens”). This is a fully electric spot and is mostly stuff from the movie. At this point they play another quick Beatles homage with an instrumental And Your Bird Can Sing. Master Exploder also makes an appearance at this point. This part confuses me though. OK th song is complex and very difficult to replicate on stage every night BUT they mime it. This also has comedy value and it is obvious and they do acknowledge it (cue Milli Vanilli comments).

It heats up when The Antichrist tells JB “his dad” is a big fan and would like to jam along. His dad is Satan and despite JB and KG being metal as fuck even they’re not sure about jamming with the Dark Lord. They have little choice when Satan(Lee) turns up on stage. JB wants to know why they are in hell, they weren’t bad people. It transpires that KG signed a contract with the devil (forging JB’s signature) while JB was in the toilet. JB has to ask KG why if KG signed the contract why JB has had a much better career ;-). So a battle for their souls ensues (similar to the movie) and my favourite song off the new album Beelzeboss is whipped out. After defeating the quare fella all is right with the world and they finish with some great tracks culminating in a medley of tracks from Tommy by The Who
