M$

Well hello there, I’ve made a jump of sorts today, along with my desire to got off the MicroSoft band wagon by getting an iMac (I will just waiting on some money to come through) I’ve decided to try Open Office. It is more or less an open source and free alternative to M$ Office. It can read and edit Office’s Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents. It has its own database software (M$’s access apparently is hard to work with), software for creating scientific/mathematical equations and I think it has a publisher like program(may play with that now). I’ve never used it before but a lot of people involved in this project do and I may as well give it a go and there is a version for MacTels so I will probably use it on the iMac when I get it.

I’m off to Zero Cipher tonight, one of the heads off the Raging Speedhorn board is going so may meet them at it, there will be a review tomorrow.

The Alchemist Cafe is flying along. I’m still an active committee member if only cause I own the webspace we host the site on but I still design the posters. We have speakers lined up until August, which we’re taking off but as the March and July one aren’t 100% yet (we have no topics or titles yet) they aint been posted. However once we get all the info the site will be rammed with information for the next 5/6 months. The numbers are increasing too so go along it’s free, there is finger food and you can have a pint.

There is some quite good geek news too:
Opera Internet Browser for the DS. Yes that’s right Nintendo have gotten together with Opera to design a Internet Browser for the DS. I think it is quite close to ready and will be on a DS cartridge. It’s been launched in Japan first but I couldn’t see it being a problem for a worldwide release.
This is something to drool over a 4GB hard drive and media player for the DS. It’s out late March and boasts the ability to store 10 full length films(though I’d probably put TV shows on it to watch to and from work). I’m not sure what codecs it will use but I could see me getting on of these. Downside is the drive feeds off the DS battery, hope it lasts long enough.
Something to scoff at. This sounds like Bull Crap.

Link Of The Day:
Open Office Go on give it a go, no harm in trying it out.

Later Days,
Halo.

  1. You not gonna get a DS-lite? And then give me your DS?
    I think you should

  2. OpenOffice is good alright… Shame it doesn’t run natively on OSX. You need stupid X11 installed first, and that’s hard to find if you don’t have the Tiger install discs.

  3. If/when I get a DS Lite (I’d prefer some nicer colours but enamel blue is nice) I will probably keep my original DS so I have one for multiplay fun also I can use it to mess with for homebrew 🙂

    X11 – Is it I? found it here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html
Also Neo Office a rebel Open Office have an alpha running natively on the Mactels and surely with the new Intel processors it will be easier to get Open Office to run natively?

  4. That version of X11 doesn’t run on Tiger, you have to get it off the install DVD, if you have one…

I think they’re working an Aqua (OSX GUI) port, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be around for another while. Which sucks.
