Viking Skull at London Barfly Jan 2008

Viking Skull, Mon, 28 Jan 2008 20:00:00, London Barfly, London, The Event on Last.fm.

From a gig review post:

Support:
Motorcity Daredevils
GU Medicine

This was billed as Viking Skull (feat. Jess Magera of CKY), now I hate to sound old (and I frequently do) but I remember when it was Viking Skull (feat. members of Raging Speedhorn). Now all the ‘horn guys have left leaving Waldie and Roddy who used to be roadies/techs for them with a new guy and Jess on drums. Enough of the history lesson on to the rocking …

I got there what I would consider late as I really wasn’t in the mood for anything but get in, see VS and get out but it was not to be. When I got there none of the bands had actually started and the power to the PA had gone. So in the end I saw all the bands. Now VS used to have members of RSH in them (as mentioned) and one of them (also ex-RSH) Frank Regan was in the first support band MCDD. Considering he used to be in VS and with the name the sound was pretty obvious to be old skool, but it was good they are to Skynrd what VS are to Sabbath an update of an older sound and MCDD pulled the swagger off with aplomb, ones to watch if they ever make it past being a support act.

Now I’ve seen GU Medicine before supporting VS and to be honest they didn’t impress me that night and tonight even less so they are just shouty, shouty rock while ripping no one off they didn’t particularly have any sound so they couldn’t. I have no idea why they are on Undergroove.

Ahh Viking Skull, I listened to you because you had RSH members in you and your first release (Chapter 1) and single (Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide) were great fist pumping metal. I wasn’t overwhelmed by Born In Hell some good tunes but nothing animal. The thing is they put on one hell of a show.

Tonight’s show was a little, MTV, I swear we’re in the Barfly watching an old school style metal/rock band singing drinking songs and there are "rock chicks" in the crowd (you know what I mean) I was a little surprised till I noticed all eyes were on Jess. Look despite who is in the band or who is watching them or why this show was great. The songs are great to sing a long to and Roddy is a great front man, would I prefer Gordon, Frank and Darren up there? Yes, will it stop me rocking out to the ‘Skull? Hell no. Name a venue gents and I’ll be back singing along, maybe bring along MCDD too.

Later days,
Halo.
