Back in the Astoria to see the Eels turned up just after doors so we’d catch Smoosh (onstage on Friday at 19:30) see all the Eels’ set (onstage at 20:15 on Friday) BUT ooooh no. Doors may have been at the same time both nights but Smoosh were not on till 20:00 and Eels till 21:00, a bit annoyed I hate standing around doing nothing in a venue with expensive alcohol and I was pretty tired as I was in the middle of a conference I was organising so the idea of this dragging on to 23:00 going back to Brixton to make sure Sarah was OK and then on to Mile End so I’d be on campus early enough to deal with any queries made me a little cranky(I like my sleep).
In the end Smoosh we’re quite impressive for a two-piece consisting of an 11 year old and a 14 year old, with some quite raw alt-rock tunes and I’d be tempted to see them live again but I don’t think that’s likely as they’re American and of a younger age than most touring acts.
Eels rocked the house again a similar but not quite identical setlist with a three song encore this time again joined by the girls from Smoosh during it. All in all the two shows were brilliant but probably not up to the standard of the “With Strings” tour.
