Gig Review – Stampin’ Ground, Underworld, 10/12/06

Support:
Suicide Watch
No Turning Back
Cinders Fall

So here it is the last EVER Stampin Ground show and the first time I’ve seen them headline. They slayed as support for The Haunted and Anthrax and have been a big fan since The Haunted show and this tour was announced BEFORE the split was so thought they were back to kick ass and take names but it was not to be :-(.

So the supports, well Suicide Watch contain ex-Stampin Ground members (Ian Glasper the old bassist and an old drummer) but I missed most of their set. The other two weren’t much cop in my opinion but hey it was the ‘Ground.

They trooped on stage on time and to a great reaction. This is a really sad night they were the kings of underground British metal in my opinion and to think they have to bow out after 15 years is just unreal. But the night speaks for itself, alright so there was no promotion being a self run show but the Underworld holds 500 but there was maximum 250 there, just sad. Well what about the show itself though? They are a force of nature on stage and their live shows are legendary and they were up for it tonight. There were explanations for the split, rants about the music industry, thanks and fecking great tunes BUT it just didn’t seem to gel. It was a really really good show and would show up most bands I’ve seen but it wasn’t great. There was no hunger to prove themselves to a crowd or fire in their belly. They will be missed but sadly I don’t think this show was the best send off they could hve had. The set is a regular setlist no surprises, normal length no real feeling this was “Goodbye”.
Of course it isn’t, Suicide Watch are on the go, some guys work elsewhere in the industry and the rest have formed Romeo Must Die so they will be back but can they top the output of SG? I think we may never see a band like them again and hope they continue to one of tiny shows but that never happens in this scene.

Oh well just to finish I have the setlist. Shades Of Grey I think is a Biohazard cover but not 100%.

Setlist:

  • Outside Looking In
  • Behind The Light
  • Dead From The Neck Up
  • I Don’t Need A Reason To Hate
  • Emasculate
  • Bear Tne Scars
  • Everyone Owes A Death
  • By Whatever Means Necessary
  • Shades Of Grey(I think)
  • Pain Is Weakness(Leaving The Body)
  • Ashes To Scatter
  • Officer Down

Later days,
Halo.
