Delusions of popularity

So I finished Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess last weekend (well not 100% I Killed Ganon which is the main aim just not got all the Poe’s souls, the insects and other “side missions”) so I’ve been thinking about getting on with the other LoZ games. I think I played a port of the original on the Gameboy many years ago but other than that this was really my first. I was going to get Windwaker which is the Gamecube Zelda and start that but I was being lazy (quite easy to find on eBay) or maybe Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask (N64 Zeldas) and get my N64 from home and play them on the console they were released on but again I’m lazy. So yesterday I popped into Computer Exchange yesterday for a browse. You can’t really go into a secondhand shop and expect to get the game/games you want but I lucked out. There was a really smashed up box with no inlay on the shelf which turned out to be The Legend of Zelda: Collectors edition. This is a collection of the Zelda games 1(NES), 2(NES), Ocarina of Time(N64) and Majora’s Mask(N64) and included a demo of Wind Waker (GC) for the Gamecube. It was never available to buy directly being free with things or by collecting other things, so it’s a bit of a find to be honest. I got a proper box but still no inlay but it was £12 for 4 full games. Seeing as my Gamecube controllers got nicked with my Gamecube I had to buy a new one so I could actually play these so I bought a secondhand wavebird there too so I can play wirelessly. That was £18 so it was all in all a good deal and day. I have started Ocarina Of Time and when I’m done with that move onto Majora’s Mask and then move back to Zelda 1 and 2. This also means I can get Windwaker cheaper than usual because there are two versions; one just has Windwaker and the other has a bonus disc of Ocarina Of Time(making it slightly more rare) which I have so I can just get the plain normal one. I also saw Pikmin for £7.99 in Game so if I’m back on Oxford St I may pick that up, it’s meant to be great and £8 aint exactly breaking the bank.

In the last paragraph I linked to a lot of Wikipedia articles because they have the most information about things in one place and explain things quite easily for people who have no idea what the article is about. OK so you take everything with a pinch of salt when it comes to things which could be bias i.e. George W. Bush’s bio or something but it can be a useful starting point. Well the conservatives in the US have gone one better, sick of the liberal bias on wikipedia(British spelling, dislike of intelligent design you know MAD things like that) they have created Conservapedia it is antidote to your liberal bias media (oh and free thought) and I think some articles will raise a chuckle/scare the feck outta ya. I think their page on Examples of Bias in Wikipedia probably just explains it all.

OK I don’t think I fall on either side of the Marmite debate, I aint had any and I don’t care BUT check out marmite.co.uk. At the moment it is advertising (in time for Paddy’s day) Marmite Guinness, it’s a nice little flash but that will be gone soon so I have archived the final pic here. I may pick up a jar (only 300,000 or something), probably won’t eat it but the jar looks nice I suppose.

So I’m thinking of taking one of the PC husks in the flat that belongs to Rich and installing Ubuntu and configuring it as a Samba server. This means I would have storage space outside my laptop (Mac Mini in the future?) as a backup of photos/MP3s etc which will be accessible from the wireless network. The Wii would also be able to see it to stream videos and music off maybe. It could also mean we could have some kind of media centre but that isn’t too important to me it would be mostly about having back ups. It looks straight forward enough (well as long as your eyes glaze over some of the commands) and it does appear to be a quick-ish job. Only thing is I’m not sure what the PC husks have processor wise(shouldn’t be a problem as long as they’re pentium at least) or storage wise (I can guarantee this is tiny) but I’ll have a chat with Rich. I know internal drives are cheap and I will only be using it as a file server so the processor won’t be too much hassle I don’t think. So anyone know any more want to offer skills for a floor to sleep on in London for a weekend?

Picked up the RSJ album and EP at their show, so far so good. Pics here. There’s a good few new ones in there of gigs and night scenes check ’em out I will probably go for a Flickr Pro a/c at some stage and make loads of sets and subsets but for the mo tags will do.

Later days,
Halo.

  1. I’ve looked into streaming video over my network to my Wii. Sadly, the only real support it has for movies is in that photo program which supports the mpeg’s your digital camera takes, so you’d have to re-encode Divx.

The only useful plugin I can find in Wii’s Opera is the Adobe Flash one… But I think you’d have to re-encode again to flv’s or something.

Lets not forget that you’d need to get the wired adapter for the Wii, wifi too slow.

  2. the first Zelda and Occarina are available on the Wii… and when you’re don with TP, send it my way 🙂

  3. Actually 1, 2 and Ocarina are all available on the virtual console and would cost me 2000 Wii Points or £14 so I got those three plus Majora’s mask for £2 less and I get an instruction book and some other extras (like a documentary about LoZ and a playable demo of Windwaker)

When Sarah’s over I’ll probably give her TP for you

  4. Cool cool!
As for file server, no problem to you. Don’t even have to be a pentium to be honest (but I’d say it will be). For storage, you could also add external drives as you need em). Check out http://www.freenas.org/ as well -it’s a good solution…
